Visborgs slott låg såväl utanför som innanför ringmurens södra del och sträckte sig längs muren från Skansport ned till ringmurens sydvästra hörn.
Slottet anlades troligen av Tyska Orden i början av 1400-talet men bygget övertogs av Erik av Pommern, vars morfar som bekant hette Valdemar Atterdag.och som 1361 hade krossat republiken Gotland.
Visbysinnevånare var misstrogna mot uppförandet men försäkrades om att de inte skulle lida någon skada. Så blev det inte. Efter tolv år som regent över Sverige och Danmark blev Erik avsatt och bosatte sig i slottet på heltid och bedrev storpolitik med Gotland som bas i sina försök att återerövra de nordiska länderna.
Slottet övergick så småningom till den danske kungen och blev säte för hans fogdar. Olof Axelsson sattes som förste länsherre på slottet. Därefter styrdes Gotland av ett par av bröderna Tott.
Slottet byggdes till under 1400- och 1500- talet och fick sin vackra kyrka. Många tinnar och torn restes, skansar och vallar förstärktes så att Visborgs slott på sin tid räknades som ett av Nordens starkaste fästen. Den kraftfullaste länsherren torde ha varit Sören Norrby, Severin Norbi som det står på hans mynt, en sjöhjälte av heroiska mått.
När danskarna anno 1679 skulle överlämna Gotland till svenskarna sprängde de slottet. Förstörelsen fullbordades då man på Karl XI:s tid byggde två kalkugnar invid ruinen, varvid den ofantliga mängden sten brändes till kalk åt svenska kronan och användes bl.a till att foga samman Stockholms nuvarande slott.
Visborgs slott jämnades på detta sätt till marken med undantag av ett par grova murar vid ringmurens södra sida.
Det finns inga samtida bilder på hur slottet såg ut i sina glansdagar men att det varit ståtligt och välbefäst råder det inget tvivel om.

Visborg Castle was located outside as well as inside the southern part of the ring wall and lied along the wall from ”Skansport” to the southwestern corner-tower.
The castle was probably built by the German Order in the beginning of the 14th century, but the construction was taken over by Erik of Pommern, grandson of Valdemar Atterdag, who in 1361 crushed the republic Gotland. The inhabitants in Visby were suspicious to the construction, but were assured that they would not suffer. It did not went so. After 12 years as regent over Sweden and Denmark, Erik was dethroned and full-time settled down at the castle, from where he committed high politics with Gotland as base in his attempts to get the Nordic countries back.
The castle became headquarter for the Danish king and his marshals. Carl Axelsson became the first feudal lord at the castle. After him Gotland was controlled by a couple of the Tott brothers. During the 15th and 16th century the castle was enlarged and got its beautiful church. Many towers and pinnacles were built, fieldworks and banks were strengthen, so that Visborg Castle at that time was considered as one of the strongest forts in the Nordic countries. The most powerful marshal was Sören Norby – Severin Norbi, as it is mentioned on his coin, a naval hero of heroic measure.
When the Danes in year 1679 should hand over Gotland to the Swedes they blew up the castle. The destruction was completed when – during the time of Karl XI – 2 lime-ovens were built alongside the ruin. Here an enormous number of bricks were burnt to lime by the Swedish Crown and were used for building the present Stockholm Castle. In this way Visborg Castle was levelled to the ground, except for a couple of walls by the southern side of the ring wall.
There are no pictures from the time of the golden age of the castle, but there is no doubt about that it has been impressive and well-fortified.
