Gotlands Infanteriregemente har sitt ursprung i Gotlands Nationalbeväring som bildades 1811 och verkade på olika orter på Gotland fram till utgången av 1886.
Enheten gjordes om till två separata varvid Gotlands Infanteriregemente var det ena som då fick beteckningen I 27.
Samtidigt byggdes ett läger här på Visborgsslätt och på samma plats togs nya kaserner i bruk 1905.
1928 omorganiserades regementet till infanterikår med beteckning I 18. -- Åter till Infanteriregemente 1936
Regementet överfördes till pansartrupperna 1963 med beteckning P 18. Genom åren har mången ynglig drillades i krigiska övningar. Trots att verksamheten nu (2008)ha lagts i malpåse kan man tycka sig höra alla GIV AKT – LYSTRING –MANÖVER— eka över kaserngården. Än kan man minnas matkön till torsdagarnas ärtsoppa.

The infantry regiment of Gotland origins from the national armament of Gotland, which was built 1811 and was active on different places on Gotland until the end of 1886.
The unit was then split into 2 parts, of which the infantry regiment of Gotland was one of them, and it was then called I 27.
At the same time a camp was built here on Visborgsslätt and at the same place new barracks came into use in 1905.
In 1928 the regiment was re-organized to infantry corps, with designation I 18 – and again to infantry regiment in 1936.
The regiment was transferred to the armour troops in 1963 with designation P 18.
During the years many young men have been drilling here in warlike trainings.
In spite of that the activity now (2008) has been put in mothballs, one can imagine hearing: READY – ATTENTION – MOVEMENT – echo over the barrack yard.
Still one can remember the food-queue to the pea soup on Thursdays.
Oh yes – it’s living in the memory.
