Geocache Description:

The cache is placed near the entrance to Smøla Wind farm. As of 2010, this is Norway's largest wind farm. When it opened in 2005, it was also Europe's largest land based wind farm.

Smøla Wind farm in May

"Smøla vindpark" (Smøla Wind farm) has 68 turbines and covers a vast area north of "Dyrnes" on the island of Smøla. Smøla municipality is in Møre & Romsdal county. Smøla is connected to the mainland by ferry from "Edøy" to "Sandvika" on the island of Tustna and further on by bridge north-east on Tustna or by ferry towards Kristiansund.

The wind farm is widely debated both locally and nationally because it is known to be a hazard for eagles and other wildlife as well as being an "eyesore" for tourists and people whom live here. The wind farm is built in two legs, and the first 48 turbines was opened by King Harald in 2002. Former head og WHO - Gro Harlem Brundtland - opened the 68 turbine large farm in 2005. These 68 turbines produce 450 GWh and provide Smøla and Kristiansund with power. The farm covers 18 sq. km. The plant is owned and operated by Statkraft.
