Geocache Description:

This cache is situated at Kristianhus boat- and Engine Museum where also the Tourist Information in Vik is located. The area is easy to access - right by the road Rv13 - with lots of space for parking. Suitable for a short break from driving, especially for people with smaller children.

The cache is hidden at a place connected to the Kristianhus Boat- and Engine Museum.

The museum is the lifework of Kristian Otterskred and houses one of Norway's biggest collections of marine motors built between 1905 and 1970, most of them made in Norway. The engine collection, the wooden boats and the fishing equipment give the visitor an insight into the cultural development of the
coast and by the fjords during a pioneering period of technical development.

Once there were 150 manufacturers for boat engines along the Norwegian coast. Today there is only one. Approximately 40 Norwegian and 26 foreign manufacturers are represented in the collection. Every motor displayed has its own history. In the museum some of these stories are told, either on text panels or photos – or by Kristian himself.

For decades small wooden boats were the only means of transport for people living along the coasts and the fjords. Engines replaced sails and oars and revolutionized the traffic at sea. The museum is a storehouse of information which will increase the visitor's understanding of the culture of our fjords and coast.

Kristian Otterskred was born and grew up in Arnafjord in Vik. His general interest for local history and a working life at sea made him an expert in boat engines, and he started to collect them. With his talent of telling stories he became an important ambassador for Vik in connection with the culture of the fjords. For his work, he received the Vik Culture Award in 1990.

Situated by the Sognefjord the museum is close to the historical quarter Vikøyri with its buildings from the 19th and 20th century protected by law. Its history goes back to the 17th century and is linked with the fjord.
