I samband med utbedringene av E-16 stod arkeologer frå Bergen for utgraving av den sensasjonelle vikingtidsplassen på Bjørkum i Lærdal i 2009.
Bjørkum ligg strategisk plassert langs eldgamle ferdselsvegar mellom aust og vest, nord og sør. Det var kort veg til fjellet, der ei mengd fangstanlegg for villrein og setervollar vitnar om utstrekte aktivitetar i vikingtida. Frå slike ressursar i fjell og utmark hadde ein tilgang til dei råvarene som var naudsynte når reidskapar skulle framstillast. Bjørkum kan ha vore ein årviss samlingsstad mellom dølar og fjell- og fjordfolk. Slike samlingar gjorde det mogeleg med både reiskaptilverking og varehandel. Kanskje har det og hendt at gjenstandar frå Bjørkum blei laga for å utruste vikingskip til handelsferder i fjerne strøk?
In connection with the improvements of the E-16 stood archaeologists from Bergen for excavation of the sensational Viking Age site at Bjørkum Lærdal in 2009.
The geographical position of Bjørkum can be related to a number of historical pathes and trails, making up complex networks of communication lines, linking mountain regions and inner coastal areas. Bjørkum var probably important for gatherings, a meeting place for people from the coast, the mountains and eastern valley areas. The finds reflect a large variety of production where the acquisition of raw material links Bjørkum to the immediate outfield aerea and further into the mountain regions. The mountain areas noth-west and south-east of Bjørkum are literally dotted with with structures related to seasonal reindeer hunting from prehistoric times as well as shielding related to Vikung Age summer farms in the mountains.
