Ved Borlo møtest vegane frå Valdres, Hallingdal og Sogn, og staden har heilt frå gammal tid vore eit viktig samferdsleknutepunkt. Strekninga frå Borlo og opp mot Filefjell var spesielt strabasiøs, med trugande steinurer, bratte fjellsider og ei fossande elv i botnen. Terrenget var krevjande både for dei som bygde Kongevegen og for dei reisande, særleg i vinterhalvåret når snø og is kunne skape store utfordringar.
Dei øvste gardane i Borgund og Valdres hadde frå starten av i 1647 ansvaret med å frakte posten over Filefjell. Dette var den lengste og tyngste roda på ruta mellom Bergen og Christiania (Oslo). Postsekken måtte berast på ryggen, og turen tok oftast tre døgn fram og tilbake. Reisande gjennom dalen stoppa ofte på Borlo, og her har vore drive turistheim i fleire generasjonar.
Borlo bygdetun er ei innhaldsrik samling hus og innbu som syner kvardagslivet i Borgund i nær fortid. Bør opplevast! Like bakom tunet går Kongevegen, og herfrå kan ein vandre på merkt sti mot Filefjell. Tunet består av 17 bygningar med utstillingar som viser eit stort mangfold frå fjellbygda Borgund. Her vil du finna bla. kinosal i møkakjellaren, amfi og utescene, og kongevegen som går gjennom det gamle kulturlandskapet.
Då den Bergenske Kongeveg vart bygd på slutten av 1700-talet, fekk ein for fyrste gong køyreveg mellom Aust- og Vestlandet. I dag er den gamle Kongevegen eitt av dei finaste veghistoriske kulturminna vi har. Den 10 mil lange vandreruta Kongevegen over Filefjell tek deg gjennom nokre av dei vakraste landskapa i Noreg. Frå tronge og dramatiske fjordlandskap inst i Sognefjorden, via høgfjellet på Filefjell, og ned i innlandsbygdene i Valdres. Ei reise mellom landsdelane - med den historiske Kongevegen som den raude tråden undervegs. Der vegen er borte nyttar ein andre trasear, slik at det blir ein samanhengande turveg frå Lærdalsøyri til Vang. Syklistar har alternative ruter utanom dei mest sårbare delane av Kongevegen.
Borlo is where the roads from Valdres, Hallingdal and Sogn meet – a junction that has been important for transport and travel since the olden days. The stretch from Borlo and up to Filefjell was particularly demanding, with unpredictable screes, steep hills and a cascading river down below.
From the beginning of 1647, it was the responsibility of the highest located farms in Borgund and Valdres to transport mail across Filefjell. The mailbag had to be carried on the back, and the journey there and back again usually took three full days. People travelling through the valley often stopped at Borlo, where a hostel has been in operation for many generations.
Borlo rural museum is a fascinating collection of buildings and interior showing everyday life in Borgund in our more recent past. Well worth a visit! Kongevegen runs just behind the museum, from where you can follow a way-marked trail towards Filefjell. The museum consists of 17 buildings with exhibitions which shows a great diversity from the mountain village of Borgund . Here you'll find a cinema in basement, amphitheater and outdoor stage, and kongevegen that runs through the old cultural landscape.
Bergenske Kongeveg, built at the end of the 1700s, was the first proper road between eastern and western Norway. Today, the old Kongevegen is one of our most beautiful cultural heritage routes. The 100 km Kongevegen across Filefjell walk leads through some of Norway's most spectacular scenery. From the narrow, dramatic fjord landscape innermost in the Sognefjord, via the high mountains at Filefjell, and down to the inland villages in Valdres. A journey from one part of the country to another – linked together by the historic Kongevegen.
