HOTELL, SKYSSTASJON OG POSTGARD. Husum hotell er eitt av dei best bevarte norske trehotella frå slutten av 1800-talet, bygt i sveitserstilen som var moderne på den tida. Karakteristisk for bygningen er verandaane med store takutstikk og rik dekor av lauvsagarbeid. Tidlegare stod fleire slike flotte hotell langs hovudvegen, til dømes på Hegg og Maristova. Diverre er dei fleste borte i dag, noko som gjer Husum hotell til ei sjeldan perle.
Det må ha vore stort for eigarane av garden då dei i 1835 fekk kongeleg løyve til å drive som skysstasjon med postføring langs Kongevegen. Etter kvart auka turisttrafikken monaleg, og Husum vart ein attraktiv stad å bu på. Ikkje minst etter at laksefisket i elva vart populært, særleg blant engelskmenn og tyskarar. Dei kunne kome i større reisefylgje på opptil 20 personar, gjerne også med tenestefolk. Hotellet var omtykt blant kjentfolk, til dømes har både Edvard Grieg og kong Oscar II budd her. At Husum hadde 10-12 skysshestar, fortel også mykje om den store trafikken.
Etter at turiststraumen auka, bygde dei i 1857 ny hovudbygning. Dagens utsjånad med all sveitsarstildekoren fekk hotellet under utvidinga og påbygginga i 1887.
Husum er ein svært gammal gard med mange spor frå førhistorisk tid, som til dømes ei steinøks frå steinalderen og heilage skålgroper frå jarnalderen. På Hjelle, nærare Vindhella, finst det heile 11 gravrøyser. Der låg også mellomaldergarden før han vart flytt hit han ligg i dag. Namnet Husum er ei fleirtalsform av hus, og det må ha vore ei lita samling av hus som har vore opphavet til namnet på garden.
Då den Bergenske Kongeveg vart bygd på slutten av 1700-talet, fekk ein for fyrste gong køyreveg mellom Aust- og Vestlandet. I dag er den gamle Kongevegen eitt av dei finaste veghistoriske kulturminna vi har. Den 10 mil lange vandreruta Kongevegen over Filefjell tek deg gjennom nokre av dei vakraste landskapa i Noreg. Frå tronge og dramatiske fjordlandskap inst i Sognefjorden, via høgfjellet på Filefjell, og ned i innlandsbygdene i Valdres. Ei reise mellom landsdelane - med den historiske Kongevegen som den raude tråden undervegs. Der vegen er borte nyttar ein andre trasear, slik at det blir ein samanhengande turveg frå Lærdalsøyri til Vang. Syklistar har alternative ruter utanom dei mest sårbare delane av Kongevegen.
HUSUM – HOTEL AND COACHING & POSTING INN. Husum Hotell is one of Norway’s best preserved wooden hotels from the late 1800s, and is built in the Swiss style popular at the time. The building features the characteristic verandas with large gable roofs and intricately carved wooden boards. There used to be several of these elegant hotels along the main route, such as at Hegg and Maristova. Sadly, most of these are now gone – making Husum Hotell a rare gem. It must have been very special for the owners of the farm when they, in 1835, were granted royal licence to operate as both a coaching and a posting inn along Kongevegen. Tourism increased rapidly, and Husum was an attractive place to stay the night. Salmon fishing in the river was particularly popular, especially amongst the English and the Germans. Visitors sometimes arrived in groups of up to 20 people, and often brought servants along. The hotel was also popular among the more prominent of guests, and has played host to visitors such as Edvard Grieg and King Oscar II. Husum had 10–12 horses available, and says a lot about the level of traffic.
Due to the increase in tourism, a new main building was erected in 1857. Its current appearance, with the Swiss-style décor, came when the hotel was extended in 1887.
Husum is a very old farm with many traces of prehistoric activity, such as a stone axe from the Stone Age and religious cup-shaped hollows from the Iron Age. At Hjelle, closer to Vindhella, there are as many as 11 burial mounds. This was also where the farm was located in medieval times, before it was moved to its present location. The term Husum is an archaic plural of hus (house), and the farm’s name it is believed to derive from a small group of dwellings.
Bergenske Kongeveg, built at the end of the 1700s, was the first proper road between eastern and western Norway. Today, the old Kongevegen is one of our most beautiful cultural heritage routes. The 100 km Kongevegen across Filefjell walk leads through some of Norway's most spectacular scenery. From the narrow, dramatic fjord landscape innermost in the Sognefjord, via the high mountains at Filefjell, and down to the inland villages in Valdres. A journey from one part of the country to another – linked together by the historic Kongevegen.
