When I first had the geocaching hobby explained to me I was told it was about finding areas of interest and learning about local history. As time has gone on it seems to have become more about the numbers and getting the smily faces. So I'm returning to my geocaching roots and hiding caches around the listed buildings of Leeds. If anyone wants to add to the Listed Leeds series then feel free, after all I need to boost my numbers too. ;-)
I previously had a physical cache near this location after 483 finds it went missing during a time I wasn't able to keep up with the hobby and it ended up being achieved. Glad to have a Virtual to place instead so people can visit the building and a container wont go missing! Perfect for city centre caching!
I also got married in Leeds Town Hall so a happy reason to have to permanent cache here
So before the virtual question some history (lifted from description on last cache)...
The Borough of Leeds approved the construction of the new municipal hall in 1850 by 24 votes to 12. The contact for its design went to architect Cuthbert Broderick. The council planed to raise money by selling shares in the building but this idea was rejected. After a local election money was raised for its construction by a tax that was paid by many of the poorest people in Leeds who lacked voting rights. The building had many delays in it building caused by changes in the design and army recruitment for the Crimean War meant a shortage of workmen along rising wages. Samuel Atack, who had the building contact, eventually went bankrupt. opened by Queen Victoria. My favourite story about Leeds Town Hall concerns the game of darts. When I researched this I kept finding different accounts of the tale so there may be just a pinch of urban myth here but its still a good story. In 1908 at the courts were trying to ban the game of Darts from pubs claiming it was a game of chance. The magistrates courts, then at Leeds Town Hall, had a trail where a local publican (or local darts player pretending according to other tales), named Foot Anakin set up a dart board in the town hall. What he then hit varies from tale to tale but the judge then reportedly threw the case claiming that 'This is no game of chance'
To log this virtual you just need to prove you were there you just need to answer this simple question. Climb the steps by the lions and goto the main entrance by the front door. Now look up and you should see some flowers on the ceiling (possibly white roses? maybe someone can confirm). Count the roses and then send me a message through message centre (if you email I'll probably not see it) with how many you found, then feel free to log straight away. Also feel free to attach a photo with GPS at the town hall but this isn't compulsory.
To clarify, as sometimes this is is misunderstood, I just mean the ceiling outside the door in area that accessible all the time. I don't mean to count anything inside the building.
