Wherigo™-cacher
Wherigo er et verktøy for å lage og spille GPS-baserte opplevelser i den virkelige verden. Ved å kombinere en Wherigo-opplevelse, en såkalt modul, med å finne en geocache, kan geocachingjakten bli en enda rikere opplevelse. Blant annet gir Wherigo geocachere muligheten å samhandle med fysiske og virtuelle elementer som objekter eller karakterer og samtidig finne en fysisk geocache. En Wherigo-kompatibel GPS-enhet kreves for å spille en Wherigo-modul.

Altevågen
Du er nå på vei ned til Altevågen. Her er det spennende felt med fornminner som består av 2 nausttufter og 5 gravrøyser. Nausttuftene tilsvarer størrelsen på båtene nevnt i hendelsene omkring Asbjørn "Selsbane" Sigurdson på 1020-tallet, beskrevet av Snorre Sturlasons i Heimskringla. I lokal tradisjon har man alltid satt "Stornaustet" og "Lillenaustet" i forbindelse med Asbjørns fartøyer.

Det har vært flere vitenskapelige undersøkelser av naustene her. De er aldersmessig bekreftet til å ha vært i funksjon ca år 1000, altså i Asbjørn Selsbanes tid. Alderen bekreftes av tre forhold. Det første er høyden over havet, ettersom nauståpningene ligger der det ville passet med havnivået for 1000 år siden. Det andre er funnene fra utgravingene i stornaustet, ei jernpil fra vikingtid eller tidlig middelalder, og en mynt fra ca. 995 – 1040 e. Kr. Det siste er C14 datering av forkullet tre som viser at naustet har vært i bruk i perioden fra 800 til 1200 e.Kr.

Langs flolinja i Altevågen ligger fem gravrøyser noenlunde på linje med nausttuftene. Det vil si at de er fra samme tid som nausttuftene, altså ca. 1000 år gamle. De fem gravrøysene er rundt 6 meter i diameter, bortsett fra ei som er båtformet og 12 ganger 4 meter. Alle har ei fordypning på toppen som viser at de er røvet eller utgravd, sannsynligvis allerede i middelalderen. Plasseringen på linje med nausttuftene gjør gravrøysene til samtidige med Asbjørn Selsbane og hans slekt. Vi vet ikke hvordan høvdingene på Trondenes ble begravet, men disse gravrøysene synes ikke å være store nok til å markere mektige høvdinger. I Nord-Norge er det gravrøyser mange steder, og disse er størrelsesmessig på det jevne. Det som er tydelig er den maritime tilknytningen der de ligger nesten i flomålet og helt inntil nausttuftene. Dersom det ikke er høvdinger som er begravet her, så kanskje det er noen av Asbjørn sine betrodde menn som har fått gravene på et så fremtredende sted?

Dette er et av få steder i landet der man kan se på en bygningsrest fra vikingtiden som også er bekreftet og omtalt i sagaen.

Using with Wherigo Player for Garmin Colorado:
Download the GWC file to your desktop.
Attach your Colorado device to your computer with a USB cable.
Copy the downloaded file to the Wherigo Directory on the device.
Detach the cable, power up and go!


Using with Wherigo Player for Pocket PC
If you don't have a cartridge directory already set up on your PC, we recommend creating one and saving the cartridge file to that directory. To move the cartridge to your mobile device, you will need to connect the device to your PC and use Microsoft ActiveSync to navigate to your cartridge directory on the device. You can simply copy and paste your cartridge from your PC into this directory. The directory is normally Groundspeak/Wherigo/Cartridges.


If you don't see your downloaded cartridge on the available list in the Wherigo Player
Try renaming the file and keeping the extension [filename].gwc. There is a known Pocket PC issue where some cartridge names don't show up in the Wherigo Player cartridge load screen.


Altevågen
You are now on your way down to Altevågen. This is an area with several artefacts, among others 2 boathouse- remains og 5 burial mounds. In local tradition the “Big Boathouse” and the “Small Boathouse” has been associated with Asbjørn “Selsbane” Sigurdsons vessels. They match in Snorre Sturlasons descriptions of the event around Asbjørn Selsbane in the 1020-ies.

There has been several archeological investigations of the boathouse- remains. They are confirmed to have been in use approximately in year 1000. In other words in Asbjørn Selsbanes era. The age is confirmed by three conditions. The first is the level above the ocean, as the opening of the boathouses is placed where the sea level would have been 1000 years ago. The second is the findings from the archaeological excavations of the “Big Boathouse”: One arrow in iron from the viking era or early middle age, and one coin from approx. 995-1040 AD. The third condition is C14 dating of charred wood that shows that the boathouse was in use in the period between 800 to 1200 AD.

Along the shoreline there is five burial sites in line with the remains of the boathouses, showing that they are all from the same period, about 1000 years old. The burial sites are 6 meters in diameter, except for one that is shaped as a boat which is 12 meters long and 4 meters wide. All of the burial sites shows signs of being robbed, probably in the medieval ages.

No one knows where the chieftains of Trondenes was buried, but these burial sites are so small that they are probably not made for mighty chieftains.The age of these burial sights seems to be of the same age as the clan of Asbjørn Selsbane, though. There are many burial sites in Northern Norway, and all are about the same size as these. The maritime relation is evident as they are placed at the shoreline, and in close presence of the boat houses. So if it is not the chieftain himself who is buried here, maybe some of the men working for Asbjørn Selsbane with high ranks got to be buried at such a prominent place?

This is one of few places around Norway where you can see parts of a building from the Viking era, that is confirmed and mentioned in the saga.
