Sagnet om Trondeneskirka
For flere hundre år siden gikk en prest på Trondenes en natt og drev i dype tanker og grundet på hvordan han skulle bli i stand til å reise sin menighet en ny kirke: for den var liten og fattig og kunne ikke klare det selv. Han hadde alt bestemt hvor kirken skulle stå, og som han nå gikk der, var han kommet ned til stedet. Der sto han nå og så utover bergene, og så fikk han med ett se en av de underjordiske komme mot seg.
Redd av seg var presten ikke, og da bergmannen spurte hvorfor han ferdes ute så sent, svarte presten at han ville så gjerne bygge en kirke for menigheten, men maktet det ikke. Det var ikke så vanskelig mente bergmannen. «Vi kan gjøre en avtale» sa han. «Om du kan skaffe oss måne inne i berget, skal vi bygge kirken, og den kan du få så stor du vil!»
Presten ble glad og slo til. Stedet hadde han jo, og så avtalte de den dagen den skulle være ferdig, eller kanskje var det en natt, for bergfolkene likte ikke dagslys.
Hver eneste kveld gikk presten ut til neset, og så hvor merkelig fort det gikk med byggingen, skjønt han så ikke en eneste mann i arbeid. Litt engstelig begynte han å bli for hvordan det ville gå når han ikke kunne skaffe månen, slik han hadde lovet. Så var det en natt kirken snart var ferdig, at presten gikk og drev ute på neset og tenkte på hvordan han skulle få innfridd sitt løfte. Plutselig hørte han inne fra berget en kone som sang for barnet sitt:
«Bysse, bysse båne, nå må båne sove, Imorra kjem han Dagfinn til berget med måne.»
Da presten hørte navnet Dagfinn, visste han at han var berget; for når bergfolk hører sitt navn nevne, så dør de. Han gikk opp til kirken og så at de satte en gullkule på tårnet. Da ropte presten: «pass deg Dagfinn at du ikke faller ned!» Men i det samme ramlet hele tårnet overende, og det braket og tordnet rundt i alle bergene. Så hørte presten en stemme rope: «Kirken skal synke sammen på bededag, og menigheten skal bli begravet under den!»
Det er merkelig, men det har ikke vært mulig å få tårn til å stå på denne kirken, skjønt man har forsøkt flere ganger. Derfor er det at tårnet den dag i dag står et stykke bortenfor kirken. Ennå kan en i bergene nedenfor kirken se tre menneskeskikkelser av stein, og vognen de brukte, den står der den også.

The Legend of the Trondenes church
Several centuries ago, one night a priest of the perish at Trondenes walked around and drifted into deep thoughts. He was wondering about how he would be able to raise a church for his congregation: as it was small and poor and could not do so itself. He had already determined where the church would stand, and as he now was walking, he had come down to the place. There he stood and looked over the rocks, and suddenly he saw one of the folks of the underground came towards him.
The priest was not afraid of him, and when the man from the underground asked why he was out so late, the priest answered that he would love to build a church for his congregation, but was unable to do so. The man told him that that should not be so difficult to get done. "We can make a deal," he said. "If you can get us a moon inside the rock, we'll build the church, and you can get it as big as you want!"
The priest got so happy that he immediately accepted the offer. He already knew where the church was to be built, so they agreed on a day it was to be finished, or maybe it was a night, as the folks of the underground did not like daylight.
Every night the priest would walk out to the headland and see how strangely efficient the church was being built, even though he could not see a single man at work. He had started to become a little anxious, as to how it would go when he couldn't get a moon underground, as he had promised.
Then a night as the church was soon to be finished, the priest was out walking at the headland thinking how he could complete his part of the deal. Suddenly he could hear the voice of a woman from the underground who sang for her child:
«Lull, lull, little child, now the child must sleep, Tomorrow Dagfinn will come home with a moon.”
When the priest heard the name Dagfinn, he knew he was saved; because when the folks of the underground hear their own name, they die. He went up to the church and saw that they were putting a golden sphere on the tower. Then the priest shouted, "Take care now Dagfinn, so that you do not fall down!" In that moment the whole tower fell over, and it roared and thundered in the rocks. The priest could hear a voice shout: "The church will collapse on the day of worship, and the congregation will be buried underneath it!"
It is weird, but it has not been possible to get a tower to stand on this church, even though it has been tried several times. That is why the tower today stands away from the church. You can still to this day see three human shapes in the rocks below the church, and the wagon they used can also be seen.
