Selbanes Seil er en enstråles fontene som spruter 50 meter høyt. Den er belyst med nordlysfargede spotter i mørketiden og er et landemerke i Harstad havn.
Den historiske bakgrunnen for navnet Selsbanes seil er den ydmykende fortellingen om Asbjørn Sigurdsson fra Trondenes som skulle til sin onkel Erling Skjalgsson for å kjøpe korn. Asbjørn var en ung og ambisiøs høvding på Trondenes som ble fri for korn på grunn av dårlige år, noe som gjorde at han ikke var i stand til å feire de nødvendige årlige blotene lengre. Kong Olav Haraldsson la press på ham ved å nekte alle i landet å selge korn til håløygene. Asbjørn fikk likevel kjøpe ei last korn via sin mektige onkel på Sola, men på heimturen kom han innom Avaldsnes der Tore Sel var årmann. Han beslagla kornet, og tok Asbjørn sitt flotte stripete seil og erstattet den med ei gammel fille. Asbjørn kom heim i skam uten korn og med et gammelt seil. Året etter fikk han riktignok hevnet seg da han igjen stod inne i huset på Avaldsnes og fikk høre at Tore Sel skrøt av hva han hadde gjort til kongen. «Da vi tok fra han kornet så klarte han seg sånn noenlunde, men da vi tok seilet da gråt han.» Dette ble for mye for Asbjørn så han tok sverdet og hugget hodet av Tore Sel, det havnet nesten i fanget til kongen. Denne historien er ei av de mest dramatiske i Snorres saga, og den fører til slutt fram til slaget på Stiklestad i 1030.
Fontenen Selsbanes seil har vært kritisert for å se ut som et sneseil i stedet for et råseil, som ville vært mer historisk korrekt. Fontenen fikk også stor oppmerksomhet da en RIB med turister kolliderte med den, og flere ble skadet.
The Sail of Selbane is a single-beam fountain that sprays 50 meters high. It is illuminated with northern lights colored spotlights when it is dark and is a landmark in Harstad harbor.
The historical background for the name Selsbanes sail is the humiliating story of Asbjørn Sigurdsson from Trondenes who was going to his uncle Erling Skjalgsson to buy grain. Asbjørn was a young and ambitious chieftain of Trondenes who was free of grain due to bad years, which meant that he was unable to celebrate the necessary annual blót. King Olav Haraldsson put pressure on him by denying everyone in the country to sell grain to Asbjørn's clan. Asbjørn still got to buy a cargo of grain via his mighty uncle at Sola, but on his return trip he came to Avaldsnes where Thorir Sel was the king’s bailiff. He seized the grain, and took from Asbjørn his beautiful striped sail and replaced it with an old rag. Asbjørn came home in shame without grain and with an old sail. The following year, he was indeed avenged when he again stood inside the house at Avaldsnes and heard that Thorir Sel boasted of what he had done to Asbjørn to the king. "When we were taking out the cargo he bore it tolerably, but not well; and when we took the sail from him he wept." This became too much for Asbjørn so he took his sword, entered the hall and cut the head off Tore Sel, it almost ended up in the lap of the king. This story is one of the most dramatic in Snorres saga, and it eventually leads to the battle at Stiklestad in 1030.
The fountain Selsbanes sail has been criticized for looking like a snow sail instead of a crude sail, which would have been more historically correct. The fountain also received a lot of attention when a RIB with tourists collided with it, and several were injured.
