Njord er sjøfartens og havets gud i norrøn mytologi. Han er guden som rår over vindens gang og kan stille storm og slukke ild. Han er guden man kan blote til for lykke på havet, for god og trygg seilas, for godt fiske, for lykke på jakt, for rikdom til havs og lands og løsøre.
Njord er av vaneslekt og bodde opprinnelig på Vanaheim. Etter fredspakten med æsene (se vanekrigen), regnes han blant de ypperste av dem og bor så på Noatun (som betyr skipstun, altså havn) som ligger ved sjøen. (De to gudeslektene var æsene og vanene, Njord og hans barn er av de få vanene som skildres i entall).
Njord var far til Frøy og Frøya.
Frøy var guden for regn og solskinn, og dermed også for markens grøde, og han er god å påkalle for god høsting og fred. Han rår også for menns velferd hva eiendom angår. Man kunne også blote til Frøy for en god framtid, for fred og for velstand og framgang.
Frøya er krigs-, fruktbarhets- og kjærlighetsgudinnen i norrøn mytologi. Hun ble påkalt i kjærlighetsspørsmål, ved graviditet og under fødsler.
Sammen regnes derfor disse tre som fruktbarhetsgudene. Under og rett etter kristningen av Norge, var det disse tre gudene det ble tatt mest avstand til. Gudebildene av disse fremhevet gjerne mannlige og kvinnelige attributter, og de var da ikke av beskjeden størrelse.
I seremoniene inngikk sanger og handlinger som opprørte samtidens blyge kristne, og de fordømte kulten som uanstendig.

Njord is the god of sailing and the ocean in Norse mythology. He is the god who manages the wind, can set a storm and extinguish fire. He is the god you can give sacrifice to for luck at sea, for good and safe sailing, for good fishing, for luck in hunting, for wealth at sea and land, and movable property.
Njord is one of the Vanirs and originally lived in Vanaheim. After the peace pact with the Aesir (see the Aesir-Vanir War), he is considered among the best of them and then lives on Noatun (which means ship's dock or harbor) which is located by the sea. (The two tribes of deities were the Aesir and the Vanir, Njord and his children are of the few Vanirs depicted in singular)
Njord was the father of Frøy and Frøya.
Frøy (Freyr) was the god of rain and sunshine, and thus also of the field's crop, and he is good to call for good harvest and peace. He is also responsible for men's welfare as far as property is concerned. One could also give sacrifice to Frøy for a good future, for peace and for prosperity and progress.
Frøya (Freya) is the fertility and love goddess of Norse mythology. She was called into love issues, during pregnancy and during birth.
Together these three are therefore considered the fertility gods. During and right after the Christianization of Norway, these three gods were the most rejected. The god images of these often emphasized male and female attributes, and they were not of a modest size. The ceremonies included songs and actions that upset contemporary shy Christians, and they condemned the cult as obscene.
