Krøttøy er den største øya i Meløyværgruppa, en samling med øyer og holmer midt ute i Andfjorden. Her er det noen få fastboende, men om sommeren strømmer det til med folk som ferierer her i sommerhus. I tillegg har øya nå fått eget hotell og opplevelsessenter i de gamle lokalene til Meløyvær Fort, Valhall.
Øygruppa har en lang og rikholdig historie. I dag tenker folk først og fremst på nyere forsvarshistorie i form av at tyskerne hadde en bunker her under krigen, og at det senere ble bygd et stort, moderne kystfort her på 80- og 90-tallet. Men historien går mye lengre tilbake i tid enn som så; disse øyene var en del av Tore Hunds rike rundt år 1000. Her finnes flere spor etter vikingene, og du står nå ved en gravhaug der det var gjort utgravinger i 1874. Her er blant annet funnet heste- og grisetenner som er mulige amuletter, hvalbeinplater, beinfragmenter med sirkler og innrissinger, håndsnellehjul og en beinkam. Funnene er datert til yngre jernalder, altså mellom 550 – 1050 e.Kr

Krøttøy is the largest island in the Meløyvær group of small islands in the middle of the Andfjord. There are very few residents here, but in the summer months the old houses are used as summer houses for recreation and vacation. In addition to that, the island has now it’s own hotel and adventure center, Valhall, in the old building formerly used by a military fortress, Meløyvær Fortress
The group of small islands have a long and rich history. These days people think of modern military history because the germans had a bunker here during world war II, and that it later was built a large, modern coastal fortress here in the 80-90ies. But the history goes far beyond that. These islands were a part of Thorir Hund’s kingdom around year 1000. There are several traces after the vikings here. Now you are standing by a burial mound where there was excavations in 1874, and they found among other things horse- and pigs teeth that are possible amulets, whale bone plates, bone fragments with circles and engravings, hand reel wheels and a comb made of bone. The findings have been dated to younger iron age, that is between 550 - 1050 AD.

To get to Krøttøy you need to take the express boat from the center of Harstad. It is Boreal transport that operates the boat
(schedule). We recommend that you plan your trip well, as there are limited possibilities for shelter and food. There are possibilities for spending the night and to reserve meals at the island, please have a look at HåloGeoTour facebookpages for more information and remember that you have to book a minimum of 4 days in advance.
