Odin (norrønt: Óðinn) er ifølge norrøn mytologi den mektigste og klokeste av gudene. Han blir også kalt Allfader. Han ble både regnet som gudenes høvding og høvdingenes gud. Foreldrene hans er Bor og Bestla, og han er bror til Vilje og Ve. Hustruen hans er Frigg, den mektigste gudinnen i Åsgard, og med henne fikk han Balder, Hod og Hermod. Med Jord (Fjorgyn) fikk han Tor. Med Rind fikk han Våle og Skjold, og med Grid fikk han Vidar.

En teori går ut på at Odin opprinnelig var en nattens gud, som senere ble forfremmet til hovedgud. En annen teori går ut på at han er en videreføring av en gammel indoeuropeisk fars- eller dødsgud, med klare sjamanistiske trekk. Han er senere også sett som krigsgud, og guden for visdom, trolldom (seid), diktning og mer.

Odin er blant annet kunnskapens og visdommens gud. Sin kunnskap fikk han da han ofret det ene øyet sitt for å drikke av kunnskapens brønn (Mimes brønn). Odin er derfor enøyd. Dette gjorde han for å forstå den verden han hadde skapt. Mime ble senere halshugd, og Odin har siden brukt hodet hans til å rådføre seg med.

Odins bolig heter Valaskjalv, der han sitter i sitt høysete Lidskjalv. Odin har spydet Gungne og gullringen Draupne.

Snorre forteller om Odin i sin Ynglingesaga, og skildrer Odin som en mektig høvding som innvandret til Skandinavia med stammen sin og bosatte seg i Gamle Sigtuna. Skalden Øyvind Finnsson diktet kvadet Håløygjatal til Håkon jarl. Her fremstilte Øyvind Håkon som etterkommer av Odin og Skade. Fornaldersagaen Sturlaug den arbeidssommes saga, som ble skrevet rundt 1300, innledes med disse ordene: «Alle menn som er kloke og har kjennskap til sannheten vet at Tyrkere og Asiamenn bosatte seg i Norderlandene. Språket deres spredte seg siden i alle land og lederen for disse folkene het Odin som menn regner sin ætt fra."

Odin er en av de mest komplekse og gåtefulle karakterene i norrøn mytologi. Han er herskeren over gudene i Valhall (Æsene), likevel drar han ofte ut på eventyr langt fra Åsgård, på lange, ensomme vandringer ute i verden, kun ut fra egne interesser. Han er alltid på søken etter visdom, og deler også ofte sin visdom med andre. Men han har lite til overs til verdier som rettferdighet eller respekt for lov og orden. Han er den høye beskytter for herskere, men også for fredløse. Han er en krigsgud, men også diktningens gud, og han har kvaliteter som ofte er assosiert med det feminine, noe som ville ha brakt usigelig skam over enhver historisk vikingkriger. Han er dyrket av de som søker prestisje, ære og nobelhet, på den annen side er han ofte anklaget for å være en slu rev.

Odin (norse:Óðinn) is, according to norse mythology the most powerful and the wisest of the gods. He is also called the Allfather. He is counted as the god’s chieftain, and the human chieftains’ own god. His parents are Bor and Bestla, and he is the brother of Vilje and Ve. His wife is Frigg, the most powerful goddess in Åsgard, and with her he got Balder, Hod and Hermod. Odin had several other children too: With Jord (Fjorgyn) he got Thor. With Rind he got Våle and Skjold, and with Grid he got Vidar.

One theory is that Odin originally was the god of the night, who later was promoted to be the main god. Another theory is that he is a continuation of an old indoeuropean father- or death-god, with shamanic traits. He is later also seen as a god of war, and a god of wisdom, magic (norse: Seid), poetry and more.

Odin is among others the god of knowledge and wisdom. He got his wisdom when he sacrificed one of his eyes to be able to drink of the well of wisdom (Norse: Mimirsbrunnir). Odin therefore has only one eye. He did this to understand the world he had created. Mimir was beheaded later on, and Odin then used his head to conference with.

Odin’s residence is called Valaskjalv, where he sits in his high seat Lidskjalv. Odin has the spear Gungne and the golden ring Draupne.

Snorre tells about Odin in his “Ynglinga saga”, and describes Odin as a powerful chieftain who migrated to Scandinavia with his tribe, to settle in Old Sigtuna. The bard Øyvind Finnsson wrote the poem “Håløygjatal” in tribute to Håkon Jarl. Here Håkon Jarl is presented as the descendant of Odin and Skade. The old Sturlaug saga, which was written around 1300, starts with these words: “Everyone who’s truly well versed in events, knows that the Turks and men of Asia settled Scandinavia. That was the origin of the language which later spread over all lands. The leader of this people was Odin who men trace their ancestry back to.”

Odin is one of the most complex and enigmatic characters in Norse mythology. He’s the ruler of the gods in Valhalla (The Aesir), yet he often ventures far from their kingdom, Åsgard, on long, solitary wanderings throughout the cosmos on purely self-interested quests. He’s a relentless seeker after and giver of wisdom, but he has little regard for communal values such as justice, fairness, or respect for law and convention. He’s the divine patron of rulers, and also of outlaws. He’s a war-god, but also a poetry-god, and he has prominent qualities that is often associated with the feminine, that would have brought unspeakable shame to any historical Viking warrior. He’s worshiped by those in search of prestige, honor, and nobility, yet he’s often cursed for being a fickle trickster. He is truly a god of contrasts.

To get to Krøttøy you need to take the express boat from the center of Harstad. It is Boreal transport that operates the boat (schedule). We recommend that you plan your trip well, as there are limited possibilities for shelter and food. There are possibilities for spending the night and to reserve meals at the island, please have a look at HåloGeoTour facebookpages for more information and remember that you have to book a minimum of 4 days in advance.
