fotoSant Joan de Caselles, Canillo is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Canillo. Also known as the Church of Sant Joan de Caselles, it is a fine example of the Andorra Romanesque architecture. The church was built between the 11th and 14th centuries. It is the tallest church-tower of Andorra. Sant Joan de Caselles, Canillo boasts of a picturesque setting, standing amidst a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains.

Sant Joan de Caselles in Canillo boasts of a magnificent three-storied bell-tower. It has Lombard windows on three sides on the upper two levels.
The tower was built separately from the rest of the church and later, was joined to the church by a body of stone. The structure comprises of a single nave with semi-circular apse. The ochre color of the bell-tower stone and the blue-grey tint of the roof slates which crown the structure, create a striking contrast and add to the visual appeal. The surrounding lush greenery makes for a picture-postcard backdrop for the beautiful structure. Especially during the winter when the land surrounding the church of Sant Joan goes under snow, the structure of the church building set against its white background, creates a spectacular sight.
Coming here, you will agree that its charm has not been exaggerated and it is that sort of a beauty which can arouse the poet inside you.

foto2Sant Joan de Caselles, Canillo remains a must visit site for you while you are on your Canillo Tours. Its architectural excellence has lent it a legendary status and it is famous not only in this part Andorra, but also all over the world for its architectural character. The chapel of Sant Joan de Caselles holds several items of considerable historical and historical worth inside it.
The interior, with its decoration and frescoes, is marvelous. There is a Renaissance altarpiece devoted to Saint John inside.

Among the objects, the choir grille, a 12th century Romanesque stucco figure of Christ on the Cross, surrounded by polychrome painting and the richly decorated, magnificent retable of 1525 ("St John and the Apocalypse"), deserve special mention.

The tombs excavated in the bedrock of the western side belong to a medieval cementery that once contained a hundred graves.
