Geocache Description:

New Street station, one of the UK's busiest, is used by 140,000 passengers a day – more than double the number it was designed for when rebuilt in the 1960s.

This cache is hidden close to the station & aims to provide a record of progress as the project to undertake replacement of the current dark & depressing station with a more modern building fit for the 21st century advances.

Having wasted many hours here, SC can't wait to use the new station, the plans look fantastic!

The Birmingham New Street Gateway project will significantly improve the passengers’ environment and transform the existing 1960s grey, concrete exterior into a stunning building fit for the 21st century.

The redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station will create:
- a concourse enclosed by a giant light-filled atrium
- three and half times the current space for passengers
- more accessible and brighter platforms
- new escalators and public lifts
- a stunning new station exterior
- better links to and through the station for pedestrians, with eight entrances
- a major stimulus for physical regeneration of the areas surrounding the station

Work started on site in April 2010, and with a plan to only close one platform at a time through the duration of the project to minimise disruption, the new station concourse is expected to open to the public in 2012, and work is due to be completed in 2015.

This is a relatively easy Traditional for you to find, all that we ask is that you take care, stealth is required (particularly whilst retrieving and replacing)- this is a very busy area (vehicles and pedestrians everywhere) at all times of day and night

We would like you to supplement your log with a photograph of your trip to GZ with the project work / progress on the new entrance in the background.

Over time, the photos posted as the project develops will provide a record of the transformation of the current entrance.

GZ coordinates place you on the busy street corner of Navigation Street and Hill Street, approximately 5m above New Street Platforms 6 & 7.

With your back to Birmingham New Street Power Signal Box (the heritage listed 1960s grey and green building, with ridged concrete layers - to your West) please photograph "up" Navigation Street (in the East / North East direction) to include the station entrance, car park and / or the shopping complex, and then include this image as part of your log.

If you are struggling to get your bearings - use the initial photo (November 2011) as your guide for the area to be photographed - this is facing East

Interesting memories of train travel / stories from New Street will earn you virtual bonus points!

Congratulations to Adam & Becky Chater on another SC FTF!!
