Please note that this is an Earthcache; a find will only be accepted if the Logging Requirements have been met.
This Earthcache like Undercover Ammonites is in the Solnhofen Limestone in the Arndale Centre. There is a difference between the listed coordinates of the two Earthcaches but that is simply to separate the two cache icons on the mapping. In reality examples of Ammonite and Belemnite fossils might be found side by side in the limestone.
Belemnites
Belemnites are extinct cephalopods of the phyllum Mollusca. They differ from other cephalopods in that they have Internal Skeletons called Rostra (sing. Rostrum). These rostra were made of calcite which accounts for them being preserved as fossils in the Mesozoic ranging from Lower Jurassic right through to the Upper Cretaceous. The soft parts are not preserved normally. Belemnites like Ammonites are extinct cephalopods, but unlike Ammonites are not good zone fossils. They lived in siimilar marine habitats and as such the fossils of both often occur together in the same rocks. They have an interesting characteristic shape which is like a bullet.
Your task is simply to search for a fossil Belemnite and fulfil the logging requirements.
Logging rqeuirements
1. What is the length of your Belemnite?
2. What is the diameter of your Belemnite?
3. Because the fossils are randomly situated in the limestone, your should be able to find a cross section. Describle the shape of the section. (Bullet shaped is not correct!)
4. You may have an internal skeleton of a cephalopod in your home. What might it be?
