05-15-21 UPDATE. Cacher Kingsnu graciously provided info for an updated Claim Question. Thanks much to Kingsnu!!

In the desert, water is precious. Plants, animals and humans all are drawn to water. As you drive down US 62 south of Carlsbad, NM, most of what you see is the open plains of the Chihuahuan desert and the Guadalupe mountains. Occasionally, water flowing down from the mountains through the porous limestone rocks bubbles to the surface in springs. This is one of those places.

Hidden away in a valley at the base of the mountains and out of view of the highway traffic, the springs create a beautiful microclime of cottonwood trees and marshlands. This is an ideal birding area where everything passing through the area seems to stop for a cool drink.

The National Park Service maintains this area as a remote site of Carlsbad Caverns. It is accessible by paved road and does not require an entry fee. There are a number of picnic spots beneath majestic Cottonwoods.

If you want a fairly easy virtual cache and a wonderful place to have a nice quiet lunch, this is your spot. We were there on the Saturday after the 4th of July and the only other folks there were an NPS lady doing a bird survey, a very nice and helpful NPS Park Ranger and a flock of wild turkeys passing by.

To claim this cache, you must email us the answer to the following question BEFORE you post you claim log. Any claims not preceded by the right answer will be deleted. Do not post you answer on this page!!!

05-15-2021. Claim Question: Find a sign with the answer to: What happened here in 1938?

Please note: If we answer your claim email and receive a automated return requiring verification of our email address, we do not respond to those as a matter of course. Some of those services are nothing but address harvesters and we choose not reply to them.

Enjoy your visit!!!
