This location has been on
my list of places to visit since childhood. An avid train fan, I
read several books about this 'back in the day'. On July 10, 2002 I
went here with my family. It does cost $7 admission, but I believe
it is worth it. (This is under the NPS administration.) You will
see a working replica of one or both of the trains that attended
the orginal Golden Spike ceremony on May 10, 1869.
It was on that date that the Union Pacific and Central Pacific
railroads joined their tracks at Promontory Summit, Utah to
complete the first transcontinental railroad. This reduced
coast-to-coast travel from 8 months to 8 days! The posted
coordinates are for the railroad track where the spike was located.
To log this find, go to the sign at N 41 37.081' W 112 33.083' and e-mail me the last
word on that sign. Please check out this link to make sure you find the correct sign
with "May 9" at the top! It is not the photo shown at left.
That is just an illustration for this page. Another option would be
to post a picture of yourself with your GPSr in front of one
of the locomotives. Previous visits to this site do not count. Logs
without the verification criteria will be deleted.
To get to the site, follow the signs directing you off of I-84.
There is another VC at the nearby rocket display. Have fun!
Thanks to CaptMK for the corrected coordinates for the sign. If
anyone gets anything different, feel free to share them.
