History

Schönbrunn Palace (German: Schloss Schönbrunn [ʃøːnˈbʁʊn]) is a former imperial summer residence located in Vienna, Austria. The 1,441-room Baroque palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historical monuments in the country. Since the mid-1950s it has been a major tourist attraction. The history of the palace and its vast gardens spans over 300 years, reflecting the changing tastes, interests, and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs.

The first activities set by the Habsburg family in this area was to purchase a large floodplain of the Wien river beneath a hill, situated between Meidling and Hietzing in 1569. Initially used for hunting purposes during the centuries the Habsburg monarchs errected the buildings of the palace according to the role model located in Versailles. Due to budget constraints the size of the facility has been chosen not that big as the facility in Versailles but anyhow in the 17th century the palace and its gardens including the oldest still active zoo of the world was rather impressive at that time - and it is still.
