Vid koordinaterna står du på en såväl historisk som nutida central plats i Lidköping. Staden öster om Lidan är medeltida och fick sina stadsprivilegier redan 1446. En man som förknippas väldigt starkt med Lidköping är Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, son till fältmarskalken, riksrådet och greven av Läckö, Jakob Pontusson De la Gardie. Mycket minner om greve Magnus här i staden. Det var han som 1672 lät anlägga den ”nya staden” väster om älven Lidan där du nu befinner dig. Nya staden är uppbyggd i ett rutmönster med raka gator och rektangulära kvarter. Nästan hela den gamla staden brann ner 1849 men byggdes åter upp, denna gång i samma rutmönster som den nya staden.
Tidigare var gamla och nya staden två oberoende städer med var sitt rådhus och borgmästare. Där du nu befinner dig på nya stadens torg kan du se greve Magnus staty och även hans kända jaktslott som tidigare fungerat som rådhus. Under sin livstid höll greve Magnus sin hand över både det gamla Lidköping och sin egen stad. Han inrättade skola och barnhem, restaurerade kyrkan och stödde på många sätt handel, hantverk och andra näringar.
Det sägs i folkmun här i staden att torget är Nordens största och att ån som delar staden är en älv. Det må vara hur som helst med det men stolta över vårt torg och älv är vi och torget är stort så det räcker i alla fall.

Från platsen där du nu står ser du fem stycken motivgjutna reliefer i brons som omsluter flaggstängerna på torget. De beskriver i tio bilder scener från Lidköpings historia. Konstnären Stig Carlsson var 20 år och arbetade på Rörstrand när han skapade dessa offentliga konstverk.

At the posted coordinates, you will find both a historical and current central location in Lidköping. The city east of Lidan is medival and got its privileges as a city already in 1446. A famous person, often strongly assiciated with Lidköping is count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, son of the Field Marshal, Privy Council, and count of Läckö, Jakob Pontusson De la Gardie. The memory of count Magnus is present all over the city. In 1672, he founded the "new town" to the west of the river Lidan, where you are currently standing. The new town is designed as a grid with straight roads and square blocks. Almost the entire old town burned to the ground in 1849, but was later rebuilt, this time using the same grid pattern as the new town.
Originally, the old and new town were separatly governed cities, that later merged into modern Lidköping. From the central square in the new town, where you are currently standing, it is possible to see a statue of count Magnus, as well as his famous hunting castle, that has also doubled as town hall. During his life, Magnus governed over both the old Lidköping and his own town. He founded a school and orphanage, restored the church and in many ways supported trade, crafts and other local industries.
It is said that the square is the largest one in the Nordic countries and that the stream splitting the town in two is a river. We are certainly proud of our square and river regardless.

Find the motif-molded reliefs on each of the five flag-poles around the square. In ten images they describe scenes from Lidköping's history. The artist Stig Carlsson was 20 years old and worked at Rörstrand when he created these public works.
To be able to log this cache, you will need to include a close up picture in your log (please do not send it in a message) containing the foundation of one of the flagpoles (with the motif clearly visible) together with your geocaching nickname and date of visit, written on your object of choice. A piece of paper or your hand will do just fine.
